A domain name is a unique address that people use on the internet for
websites or for e-mail. It's a string of characters which usually spells out
a word or phrase, a company or person's name. For this company 'jewellsweb.co.uk'
is the domain name.
Your domain name can be used to create email addresses eg:
enquiries@jewellsweb.co.uk.
We will help you choose a domain name and register it for you (renewable
annually).
What is a Website?
A Website is made up of a series of Web Pages (like the one you're looking at
now) and is built using different types of files which link together to make
your website work.
What is a Web Page?
A Web Page is an individual page within your website, made up of a Header which normally contains the name of the
website and logo, a Menu which contains links to other web pages in your
website, a Content section and a Footer.
What is Hosting?
All the files used to create your website need to be stored together and
linked to your domain name in order for users to be able to view your
Website across
the internet. Hosting is effectively the storage space where your files are
held. When you buy hosting you are paying for this storage space.
What is SSL and is my website secure?
An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is an encryption process used
to secure internet communications, it creates a secure connection between
computers, encrypting any information sent between your browser and a secure
(https) website.
If your website URL starts with "http://" then it's not secure, if it starts
with "https://" and you can see a little padlock icon in the URL bar, then
it is secure and you can send information safely.
SSL certificates are issued by trusted certification authorities. These
organisations make checks to ensure that a website and website owner are
legitimate. They then issue a certificate for a set period of time which is
stored on the websites hosting server to say that these checks have been
carried out.
When you visit an SSL web page, your web browser software checks the
certificate it uses. If it is from a trusted certification authority, it
will allow you to browse as normal. If your browser doesn't recognise the
certificate provider, it will warn you. This doesn't necessarily mean that
the website is untrustworthy just that it isn't secure and users may become
cautious.
Can I have a personal email address to match my domain name?
Yes you can and you can have more than one. For example, your email address could be:
info@xxxxx.co.uk or yourname@xxxxx.com
How will I access my email?
You will be able to access your email account(s) through the Webmail App. All you need is access to the internet and you can log in to your
account. You can set up
automatic replies, mail forwarding and out of office messages. You can also
download your email to your chosen device via POP3 and IMAP access or have
it forwarded to another email account.
What is a Favicon?
Favicon is short for Favourite icon, it's a small image file associated with
your website.
Eg:
or
Internet browsers eg Internet Explorer display a websites favicon in the
browser's address bar (sometimes in the history as well) and next to the
page's name when you save a link in your Favourites.
Will you manage my Website and updated it for me, so I don't have to worry
about it?
Yes we will, we offer a full maintenance and management service for your
site which will include your hosting fees, updates and visitor
statistics reports or you can pay for updates as and when you need them.
What are Statistics Reports?
These are reports emailed to you in .pdf format which provide you
with information on the visitors who looked at your website. For example,
how many visitors, their location, how long they looked at you website for
and what they looked at. They can be very useful in understanding how
visitors are using your website, what works and what you can improve to
attract more visitors.
You've made the changes I asked for to my Website but the page looks the same?
You need to refresh the page, if you're using a desktop
computer or laptop press the F5 button on your keyboard or press the
refresh/reload button which looks like this .
In most cases this will work but if you still don't see the changes you
expect then you will need to clear your Internet Browsers history and then
close and open the browser again.
This is because browsers save and store copies of web pages and will open
the stored copy for speed. In order to force the browser to look for the new
copy of the web page you need to delete any old versions by clearing your
browser history.
